so, my daughter is now 2 years and 2 days old! i was looking at her tonight and it's like she's actually made a leap in personality growth since her birthday. tonight she just looked and seemed like such a big girl. no, i don't mourn the passing of time, i made a commitment (for richer or poorer) to make her my priority, so i've been able to enjoy every moment with her. time has not passed too quickly and i truly enjoy watching her growing and moving through these phases of her childhood.
the party was good, i took a risk and made her cake. i'm sure i've technically baked a cake before, but i've never really made one for anything like this before. we did a polka dot/bubble theme. so i did a funfetti cake (2 -9" round cakes) put regular white icing on them, and then decorated with dots of colored fondant icing. i found the fondant already dyed in bright colors at joann's. all i had to do was roll it out and cut out the circles and put them on the cake..like play-doh. it turned out exactly as i hoped... i was soo excited! i kept telling my mom as i was doing it "i'm soo proud of myself!! i love it!!" we hung bright circles of construction paper all over the house and everything (including the wrappings on her gifts from friends who played along with the theme) was polka-dot. she had a blast and i loved having my house full of people laughing and talking.
my mom came for alena's party, but my dad had chosen to attend a weekend-long seminar at his alma-mater in knoxville (a restoration-movement themed seminar at johnson bible college, if you're truly interested). this was almost a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, so as much as he hated missing alena's party, this was very important to him. i was bummed, but understood and probably would've made the same decision in his shoes (after all, they'll have her for a week next month and she'll have a bday next year too). alena's party was friday night, her cousin's 2yr party was saturday at noon. mom decided not to go, as it's not her family. i was bummed that she had to stay at my empty house when she had traveled so far to see us, but can't miss john's party. when we got home, i noticed a strange car in my driveway...followed by recognizing my dad on the porch!! he had just arrived. after his seminar ended at noon on saturday, he high-tailed it over to nashville to surprise me! what a great surprise! he had to leave at 5am on sunday morning to get back home, but we had saturday afternoon and evening together. YAY, DAD!
it was a great weekend, though exhausting. next weekend: alena's 2 yr pics by a family friend in atlanta!
