the name of this blog was inspired by a great song by one of jared and my favorite bands Carbon Leaf. though the whole song doesn't translate to our life, we still love the idea of living a life less ordinary and less sedentary. in fact, to wake up and look back on a mediocre life is one of my greatest fears.

enjoy the random comments of my head as i bumble through life.

"Life Less Ordinary"

Live a life less ordinary
Live a life extraordinary with me
Live a life less sedentary
Live a life evolutionary with me
Well I hate to be a bother,
But it's you and there's no other, I do believe
You can call me naive but...
I know me very well (at least as far as I can tell)
And I know what I need

ah, music

i DO love the music scene here in nashville. i've learned more about indie acts and truly great musicians here than anywhere else. we have a great independent radio station that i just can't get enough of (and they don't overplay songs, so you really can listen to it constantly!)

so there's this song called Kandi by a indie band called One Eskimo. tonight was about the 4th time i've heard it. i've always been one to really listen to lyrics and the message of a song. the lyrics are so simple, yet full of emotion. it starts out with a guy singing about his true, though admittedly imperfect, love for his woman. but alas, he heard from a friend that she cheated, he wants to know what this other guy has or did that he doesn't. her response...she doesn't make excuses or accusations, she simply says "he called me baby, baby, baby...all night long." the song is so beautiful (though i DO love bluesy songs, so it already had a head start with me) but so simple. and so full of emotion.

sadly, jared and i know so many people who have been hurt by someone cheating and breaking up their marriage. when i hear this song, i just soak it up. i feel his pain. i think of the pain our friends must have gone through. i hear her indifference and honesty. i renew my vow to hold on tight to jared and not let anyone come between us.

so i went searching for this song, this band. i'd like you to listen to the song before i tell you what i found.

SONG
(btw, i just saw this video for the first time. also full of beautiful simple symbolism)

so, the band is indie and british. they're 4 guys...yeah, even though the lead singer's name is kristian and another guy has long hair, they're all guys. so who is the chick singing?

i guessed norah jones, thought maybe i had heard the song announced on the radio as such. but a google search turned up nothing to back that up.

jared guessed adele. he's pretty good at guessing voices like that.

nope. the answer is.... are you ready? it blew my mind.

the female part is a flat out sample of a song by Candi Station called "he called me baby" ......which is her version of a pasty cline song.

so patsy cline wrote the lyrics to this song (i believe) and it was released on an album in 1964. then it was pretty drastically remade in 1970 by gospel and R&B singer Candi Station. then, Eskimo One came along and took the song and wove it directly into one of their songs.

genius. pure genius. simple, beautiful. not over-produced.

nashville, you haven't been the easiest place for me to live, but your music does cover a multitude of sins.

*in reading the comments on the youtube postings of these songs, i see that this song is getting pretty popular and lots of people are figuring out the historical connections of the song. apologies if this is old news to you. i just put it all together tonight and had to share!*
