when i feel like i have about 10 things to put up as a FB status, i realize i should probably just write a quick blog about it instead...so here's a few short thoughts:
~ i recently finished reading dr. asa andrews' book "empowering your health". it was pretty good, and while i'm pretty sure i'll never be able to follow everything he says, most of it makes sense. he says that there's 3 parts to our health: mental, chemical and structural. if we keep all these in balance with proper nutrition and exercise, we'll all be much healthier. the problems occur (especially things like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc) when we put toxins in our bodies day after day, year after year and never allow our bodies to clean themselves. toxins come from eating trash for food, the chemicals in our water and soaps, lotions and other personal care products, no exercise and not drinking water. he believes that if we "lifestyled" our way into chronic illness or just a life of feeling tired all the time, we can "lifestyle" our way out.
~ as i write this, alena is unwrapping each one of her suckers, enjoying playing with the wrappers, and when she gets one totally unwrapped, she says "yuck!" and wraps it back up. seriously. i took her trick-or-treating, and i was willing to let her have a sucker or two, but daddy taught her to say "yuck" to them and so not a single bit of candy has passed her lips. ...even though we're eating it in front of her... (most of you know how anti-sugar i am. hey...that's not my kid screaming in the grocery store for candy--my kid is screaming to get down and touch everything on the bottom shelf..)
~ came across this quote, i believe it's taken from seven habits..
Next to physical survival, the greatest need of a human being is psychological survival - to be understood, to be affirmed, to be validated, and to be appreciated.
i appreciate this and am glad to see i'm not the only one with this need.
~ the wonderful, beautiful and talented ann cardamone and taylor pinch from brevard county florida are coming to visit us this weekend. they both needed an escape (from FL, can you imagine?) and decided to come see us. ann was in the youth group when we were down there and taylor's still in high school, yet you forget the age difference quickly when talking to them. i can't wait to see them!!!
~ i love the fall, i hate the winter. i'm trying to remember to take advantage of the beautiful scenery each day, knowing that all too soon it will be freezing cold and drear for a while.
ok, that's it for now. :D

I'm not sure I really believe him about cancer being a buildup of toxins... I mean, in some cases, yes. Obviously, lung cancer has a tendency to be this way. But a lot of things that are labeled carcinogenic in studies are not as carcinogenic in practice... like potatoes. (I'm not making this up, studies have shown potatoes are carcinogenic, too. But then you'd have to eat like a million and four every day).
ReplyDeleteMore than anything, I think those kind of health problems are genetic, or at least influenced by genetics... the difference is that two generations ago, people didn't live long enough to HAVE those problems. Or if they did, they certainly weren't identifiable. That being said, I still think he has a good guideline for living - it's still a healthy attitude to have, but I don't think that living the healthiest life ever necessarily means that I'll live 20 years longer than if I didn't use deodorant or eat cookies. =) At least, that's what I'm telling myself.
I also think that quote about affirmation is a great one. I even think that something like that is referenced in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (you may not have needed to study that, but every education major out there did. Bleh.)
You should sign up for GoodReads or something similar! I have an account on there and love it - helps me keep track of everything I read and whether it was worth it. I don't usually write reviews, but I do love looking back to see how I've spent the past six months or year. You can see mine here if you'd like: http://www.goodreads.com/mlwl.

no, i don't think everything can be prevented either. and death is part of the design of life. i'm always a bit cynical when dr. oz or someone talks about taking extreme measures to live longer. i mean, your insides could be healthy enough to live to 120, but that doesn't decrease your chances of getting hit by a bus.... but--there's no negative in eating healthily instead of constant junk.
ReplyDeletei've studied maslow in psychology classes. it makes a lot of sense.
